Adrienne Maree Brown et Autumn Brown, deux sœurs militantes américaines, affirment dans leur podcast « How to Survive the End of the World » (Comment survivre à la fin du monde) que nous ne devons plus demander aux autres : « Partageons-nous la même vision du monde ? », mais plutôt les inviter en disant : « Ton cœur bat-il et veux-tu continuer à vivre ? Alors suis-nous. Le reste, nous le découvrirons ensemble… »
Nous tenons profondément à suivre ce conseil et à essayer de comprendre, ensemble, l’époque que nous vivons.
Dans un article passionnant publié dans The Guardian, intitulé The Rise of End Times Fascism (L’essor du fascisme de fin des temps), Naomi Klein et Astra Taylor dressent un tableau réaliste de notre époque qui devrait nous interpeller, et fortement, car, même si à nous gens ordinaires il ne nous paraît pas si évident, les temps que nous traversons concernent tout le monde, indépendamment des frontières et des latitudes.
Prenons un exemple emblématique. Probablement pas tout le monde connait la ville de Prospéra, mais il vaut la peine d’en apprendre l’existence.
Fondée en 2017 sur l’île des Caraïbes de Roatán au Honduras, Próspera est une ville privée avec un gouvernement autonome, où il est possible de proposer des lois personnalisées. Dans un style typiquement entrepreneurial, la ville offre des services promus sur son site, tels que : « protection de la propriété privée de niveau mondial ; fiscalité avantageuse ; sécurité ; facilité de faire des affaires ». L’innovation technologique y est la bienvenue : on y expérimente des cliniques pour la longévité et des technologies émergentes. Le bitcoin est la monnaie légale et unité de compte reconnue.
Bien que déclarée inconstitutionnelle par le gouvernement hondurien, cela n’a entraîné aucune conséquence réelle, même si une bataille juridique est en cours. Le fait est que Próspera fonctionne selon le principe : « on est au-dessus de tout, on fait comme bon nous semble ».
L’île de Roatán n’est pas inhabitée : la population autochtone y a des liens profonds avec sa terre, véritable paradis naturel. Mais pour ces habitants, les expropriations et les atteintes environnementales ne sont pas une menace abstraite : elles sont bien réelles. Car pour exister, Próspera obéit rigoureusement au dicton : ta mort, ma vie.
Próspera, qui n’est qu’un exemple parmi d’autres (pensons à la Palestine, au Groenland, ou même à Mars) incarne cette croyance de plus en plus répandue selon laquelle, comme l’explique Naomi Klein : « Ceux qui en ont les moyens ont le droit de se soustraire aux obligations de la citoyenneté, notamment les impôts et les réglementations contraignantes. … rêvent de découper le monde en havres hypercapitalistes, libérés de la démocratie, sous le contrôle exclusif des plus fortunés, protégés par des mercenaires privés, servis par des robots IA et financés par des cryptomonnaies ». Quand nous parlons de la montée de l’extrême droite à l’échelle mondiale, c’est à cette idéologie que nous faisons référence.
De l’Italie à Israël, de l’Australie aux États-Unis, en passant par la France et l’Allemagne, sans oublier les grandes institutions internationales, les puissants s’emploient à construire des États-bunkers armés et brutaux, d’où ils expulsent et emprisonnent les humains indésirables, et où ils s’approprient, par la force, de la terre, de l’eau, de l’énergie, des minéraux stratégiques (comme ceux que Trump s’assure en Ukraine), nécessaires à leur survie immédiate.
Et puis il y a les nouvelles technologies. Comme l’écrivent Naomi Klein et Astra Taylor avec un langage évocateur : « La Silicon Valley en a fini avec l’altruisme. »
Ses dirigeants hypercapitalistes et hypertechnologiques nous promettent que l’intelligence artificielle construit un nouveau monde, sans sacrifier l’ancien ; mais c’est faux. Car ces technologies consomment trop d’énergie, trop de minéraux stratégiques, trop d’eau, et elles incinèrent littéralement la planète.
Les profits colossaux des dirigeants de la Silicon Valley reposent sur cette dévastation, qu’ils nous demandent d’accepter en nous convainquant qu’elle est vertueuse. Pour cela, ils ont banalisé le mépris de l’idée que les êtres humains se doivent mutuellement quelque chose au point que des personnes comme Elon Musk déclarent sans honte que l’empathie est la faiblesse fondamentale de la civilisation occidentale.
Le tableau dressé par Klein et Taylor est apocalyptique. Il est urgent, pour nous dont le cœur bat encore et qui voulons vivre sur cette planète dans le respect de ses ressources et de ses habitants, de nous poser la question : comment résister à cette course vers la fin des temps ?
Comme Klein et Taylor, nous pensons que la réponse est claire : « En nous aidant les uns les autres. » D’abord, en comprenant que nous avons affaire à une idéologie qui trahit l’humanité, ayant scellé un pacte avec la mort et la destruction en échange de sa propre survie, et qui, ce faisant, renonce à l’habitabilité de notre monde partagé, à sa beauté, à ses peuples, à nos enfants, aux autres espèces.
Ensuite, en persistant à raconter une autre histoire, non pas celle de l’épuisement, de la destruction et de la mort, mais celle d’un avenir fondé sur l’interdépendance, l’appartenance, la fidélité à la réalité terrestre, le droit d’être là où l’on est, le droit de vivre dignement même quand les circonstances nous obligent à nous déplacer, le respect des droits des peuples autochtones et un monde sans frontières.

A Way of Seeing Otherwise
Adrienne Maree Brown and Autumn Brown, two American activist sisters, say in their podcast “How to Survive the End of the World” that we should stop asking others: “Do we share the same worldview?” and instead invite them by saying: “Is your heart beating and do you plan to live? Then come this way and we will figure out the rest on the other side …”
We care deeply about following this suggestion. What follows is an attempt to understand the times we’re living in, and to begin discovering the rest, together.
In a powerful article published in The Guardian, titled “The rise of end times fascism”, Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor paint a stark and realistic portrait of our era, an era that concerns all of us, even if it’s not immediately visible to ordinary people like us, because the times we are living in affect us all, regardless of borders or latitudes.
Let’s begin with a striking example. The city of Próspera may not be widely known, but it’s worth learning about. Founded in 2017, Próspera is a private city with autonomous governance, where individuals can propose customized laws. In typical entrepreneurial fashion, the city offers services, promoted on its website, that include: “World-class protection of property rights; favorable taxation; security; ease of doing business”. Technological innovations are more than welcome: the city hosts advanced projects, such as longevity clinics and experiments with emerging technologies. Bitcoin is recognized as a legal currency and a unit of account.
Próspera is located on the Caribbean island of Roatán, in Honduras. Although the Honduran government has declared it unconstitutional, there have been no real consequences—there is an ongoing legal battle, but in practice, Próspera continue to exist in the name of the principle “we’re above it all and we do as we please.”
Roatán is far from uninhabited, the indigenous population has deep ties to their land, which is a natural paradise. But for these inhabitants, land expropriations and environmental damage are more than a threat. Próspera, in order to exist, follows the brutal logic of “your death, my life”.
Próspera is just one example (alongside Palestine, Greenland, and even Mars) of a growing worldview that Naomi Klein describes clearly: “that those with means have the right to walk away from the obligations of citizenship, especially taxes and burdensome regulation. … They dream of splintering governments and carving up the world into hyper-capitalist, democracy-free havens under the sole control of the supremely wealthy, protected by private mercenaries, serviced by AI robots and financed by cryptocurrencies.”
When we say that the far right is on the rise globally, we’re referring to this ideology.
From Italy to Israel, from Australia to the United States, through France and Germany, and even within major international institutions, the powerful are aiming to build their nations like fortified bunkers: armed, brutal, expelling and imprisoning “undesirable” human beings, and violently seizing land, water, energy, and strategic minerals (like those Trump is securing in Ukraine) that they deem necessary for their immediate survival.
And then there are the new technologies. As Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor write in evocative language, “Silicon Valley is done with altruism.”
Its hyper-capitalist, high-tech leaders assure us that they are building a better world through artificial intelligence, and that they won’t sacrifice this one, but that’s a lie. AI technologies consume too much energy, too many strategic minerals, too much water, and are scorching the planet.
The profits of Silicon Valley’s elite are based on this devastation, which can only be justified by convincing us it is somehow for our own good. To do this, they’ve normalized a disdain for the very idea that we owe something to each other as human beings. That’s why people like Elon Musk say, shamelessly, that “Empathy is the fundamental weakness of Western civilization”.
The picture painted by Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor is indeed apocalyptic. And so, for those of us whose hearts still beat, who still want to live on this planet while respecting its resources and its other inhabitants, the real question is: “How can we resist and fight back against this race toward the end times?”
As Klein and Taylor state clearly, the only answer is: “By helping each other.”
First, by helping each other understand that we are facing an ideology that betrays humanity and has struck a bargain with death and destruction in exchange for its own survival, at the cost of the livability of our shared world, its beauty, its people, our children, and other species.
Second, by insisting on telling a different story. A story not of depletion, destruction, and death, but of better times, of interdependence, of belonging, of loyalty to the Earth, of the right to be where we are, of the right to live with dignity, even when we are forced to move by circumstance, a story of respect for Indigenous rights and a world without borders.
